Litchfield to Uluru

Loooooong looooong day of driving. Nothing much to report.  Stopped in Katherine for a coffee at  Macca's and nearly died. 40 degrees at 5.00 in the arvo! Like stepping into a furnace. Fuelled up and hit the road for another hour for an overnight roadside stop. Wasn't that fun. NOT! Welcome back to road trains all night. As if that wasn't bad enough two groups of backpackers decided it was party central, so at midnight Dezzi became Mayor of the Free Camp and politely told them it was bed time, and there are others to consider. Finally got some sleep in the wee hours. Early start packing up (and, what a shame,  we woke the poor dears up).

Coffee stop at Mataranka (the local folk still sitting under the same tree as last drive through!). Fuel and brekky at Daly Waters.

Thought Renner Springs sounded nice for lunch and maybe a quick dip. According to the travel book we had, and I quote "It offers great birdlife and the chance to cool off in the lagoon" Well.....the sanga was sensational! The "Springs" ??? more like a muddy puddle. And advised to beware of the bad tempered geese. Clearly no quick dip, so back on the road.

mmmm! Love a dip in there?

with the bad tempered geese!

Overnight at Tennant Creek (peaceful). Nothing to report about this place I can tell you. The best thing in Tennant Creek is the Top of the Town Cafe for brekky.

Devil's Marbles was next. These are phenomenal! No pics. We didn't stop. We are going to do that on the way back after Uluru. Stay tuned.

Next stop Wycliffe Well to check out the "UFO Capital of Australia"!  We didn't see any flying saucers or get beamed to the heavens, but the price of diesel was like rocket fuel!

Lucky there is the phone box there so he can phone home...

Glad we weren't empty!

Had a stretch of legs look around Barrow Creek Telegraph Station. So today's history lesson.....
In 1872 a repeater station was opened to provide a communication link between Australia and Europe. With the Developement of the station a pub soon followed and is still open. Love the Auzzie development strategy!

The local lock up.

Next stop..... the geographical dead set centre of Australia!

Drive, drive, drive. See a sign that says mango ice cream. STOP!  Be buggered that not only at Ti Tree Mango Farm can you get the best ever mango ice cream, but also do a spot of wine tasting! How could we refuse?

Dezzi getting comfy.

Cheers! Very different.

The Mango bubbly was actually quite approachable, so we got half a dozen of course :)

You could also buy frozen kangaroo tails, still in one piece, complete with skin on! Very popular with the local folk from the 'community" up the road. They were in stocking up while we were there. Ten dollar fuel, tails and some coca cola thanks Boss! Must be having a party that night! Ha ha ha!

Something else you don't expect to see in the middle of Australia. Grape vines. Not for wine. These are table grapes, for eating. There you go.

Had a nice two night stopover in Alice Springs to do the chores and stock the Waeco. Very nice city.

The view from the middle of town lookout.

Alice is surrounded by the MacDonnell Ranges, and is quite pretty.

Tourist shot.

I call this one flower.

Next adventure Uluru :)
